The World Health Organisation (WHO) says six countries, including Nigeria, accounted for around 50 percent of malaria deaths worldwide in 2020.
The organisation disclosed this in its world malaria report released on Monday.
According to WHO’s latest report , there was an estimate of 241 million malaria cases and 627,000 malaria deaths —mostly of children under five — worldwide in 2020.
The 2020 figure represents about 14 million more cases in 2020, compared to 2019, and 69,000 more deaths. In the report, Nigeria was also among six countries that accounted for 55 percent of all cases worldwide.

“About 96% of malaria deaths globally were in 29 countries. Six countries – Nigeria (27%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (12%), Uganda (5%), Mozambique (4%), Angola (3%) and Burkina Faso (3%) – accounted for just over half of all malaria deaths globally in 2020,” the report reads.
“Twenty-nine countries accounted for 96% of malaria cases globally, and six countries – Nigeria (27%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (12%), Uganda (5%), Mozambique (4%), Angola (3.4%) and Burkina Faso (3.4%) –aqccounted for about 55% of all cases globally.”

The students union government (SUG)of Kaduna Polytechnic, led by Comr. Aliyu Muhammad Mangal, has made a generous support of sanitation materials to commemorate World Cleaning Day. The materials, which include dustbins, brooms, Izal, Hypo, Dettol, Camphor, insecticides, fumigation items, rakes, packer, trash disposal bin and detergents, were handed over to Dr. Aliyu Hassan Ibrahim, the Managing Director of Kadpoly Consult. Present at the event were also Representative of Rector, Dean of Students Affairs, Malam Farouq Ndamadu Musa, Dean of various collages, Sanitation Committee representatives from collages and other dignitaries.
During the presentation, Dr. Aliyu Hassan Ibrahim commended the SUG administration for their exceptional performance, stating that they are the best in the history of the institution. He also expressed his appreciation for their efforts in ensuring a clean learning environment.

The Academic staff union of polytechnics (ASUP) has announced a Nationwide strike effective from Tuesday 5th to Wednesday 6th September 2023.
According to a memo obtained by POLYTV by the union secretary general, Mr shammah kpanja, all polytechnic lectures have been directed to withdraw their service on the 5th and 6th September 2023.

The man who designed Nigeria’s flag, Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, is dead on 30 August, 2023.
He lived with his father until he was 8 years old before he relocated to the northern part of Nigeria. He began his early education in the North. After his father’sl retirement, he came down to the West and was re-enrolled at Baptist Day Secondary School, ibadan for his primary education and ibadan Grammar school, (IGS) Ibadan, for his secondary education.
Mr Akinkunmi died at the age of 86 in the early hours of Tuesday after a brief illness.
His demise was announced via the Facebook account of one of his children, Samuel Akinkunmi.
He wrote, “Life is indeed transient; I can say boldly that you live a life with a landmark. Continue to rest, my father! Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (O.F.R.): Great Man has gone. “ Although a native of Abeokuta in Ogun State, Mr Akinkumi lived in ibadan until his demise.
He was born on 10th May 1936.

He would then work for some years before gaining admission to the Norwood Technical College in London where he studied electrical engineering. While studying there, he designed the Nigerian Flag.
His entry was adjudged the best among theoughly 2,000 entries submitted designs.
The flag was officially raised on IndependencebDay 1st October, 1960 signifying the pulling down British flag in Nigeria Mr Akinkunmi was rewarded with 100 pounds by the government when his design was selected.
He was honoured as a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) by former President Gooodluck Jonathan.
